Saint Valentine’s Day

It’s Valentine’s Day. The origin of the day on which we celebrate love by exchanging cards and gifts remains somewhat of a mystery. Of the many theories presented, it is unclear which is the most widely accepted. It appears there were at least three Saint Valentines, all martyrs. Opinions vary on which Saint Valentine is the real Patron of the day. Legends abound about the history of Valentine’s Day … I like the old English and French belief that birds began their mating season on February 14, dubbing it a day of romance, conjuring up images of hearts and flowers.

“We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.”   (Legend of St. Valentine)

In my opinion the, historical probabilities of how the day was started are interesting, but I find that recognizing a day of romance is a great idea, no matter where it originated!

So, let’s all get in the mood by honoring those we love with words of affection, heartfelt cards, love songs, or even special gifts like cutout hearts, candy and flowers.
